How Using The Wrong People Can Affect You!
Incorrect design and installation can affect the following:
- Performance of LPG/gas appliances which the pipework serves
- The safety of the property and the people residing in it and closeby
When gas/LPG pipework is not correctly sized it can affect the performance, and in severe cases, the safe working operation of the gas appliances which are connected to it.
Gas pressure with mains gas and LPG supply systems are regulated. All gas & LPG appliances are designed to work at set pressures and require particular flows so they can operate as designed. Therefore, any pipework installed from the meter/cylinder to the appliances within the property needs to be carefully designed as not to restrict the flow or reduce the working pressure. Poorly designed pipework will not only have a negative effect on both of these aspects which can affect performance, and in severe cases, it can make appliances operate dangerously.
Other poor installation practices can lead to such things as deterioration of the gas/LPG pipework and gas escapes. Mains gas, and especially LPG, can be extremely hazardous when leaks occur within a property or in other areas where they can accumulate. History has numerous examples of explosions caused by both forms of gas, which not only destroys property but kills also.
When installed correctly, gas and LPG pipework is very safe and can provide low-cost fuel to be used by appliances for a variety of uses. It is vital not only to use a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer for related work but to use one who is highly skilled and experienced.
The Difference Between LPG And Mains Gas
LPG and mains gas have several mains differences, but generally speaking, LPG is used for related purposes to properties “off-grid” who have no access to mains gas. LPG is also commonly used in mobile homes and static caravans.
Mains gas is much cheaper to purchase than LPG. LPG comes in two forms, bottled and bulk vessel. Bulk vessel costs are the cheapest form of LPG but typically are still 2.5-3 times more expensive than mains gas per kW. LPG cylinder fuel costs vary depending on location and the supplier, but these are typically 6-12 times dearer per kW than mains gas.
LPG is a richer fuel, and therefore for every cubic meter, it will produce more energy than what mains natural gas will produce. As a result, gas appliances that run on LPG use low volumes of LPG than they would if running on mains gas.
LPG is more volatile than mains gas, it requires less in a confined space to become explosive. LPG is also denser than air, so unlike mains gas, which is lighter than air, LPG will readily collect at a low level. This can make it more difficult to notice a gas leak and can accumulate to dangerous/explosive levels much more easily.
