Here is a gas boiler that we installed in a loft in Bromyard, Herefordshire

Whether your boiler or entire central heating system is in need of replacement, or you’re renovating and are unsure about the quality and safety of your existing gas boiler, it helps to know the steps involved in getting a new boiler installed… It’s also important to research the differences between systems and where applicable fuel sources to help you make the right decision! More information about gas boiler system types can be found here.

Below we have put together a guide to help people know what questions to ask when seeking a boiler installation and the steps involved, particularly for those looking for a boiler installation in Hereford. We like to show existing and potential clients our honesty as we believe this is the best way to not only obtain customers, but to operate in general.

Step 1: Arrange a for a Quotation

Make an appointment for a suitably Gas Safe registered installer/company to visit your home. You will need to make sure they have clear access to the boiler, surrounding pipework and radiators.

Always use a company that sends an experienced Gas Safe certified engineer to do the survey. There are worrying numbers of companies that use sales men and other unqualified people to advise you on what is best for your property. This often ends with the customer having issues upon completion.

The engineer should check the condition of your boiler and central heating system and assess the type of boiler and its size/capacity you will need for the system to work at its best. It is a common tactic for  installers/companies to advise you that you need a larger boiler than what you actually do as this will generate them more money through additional work (such as gas runs).

The engineer should recommend the best boiler type, make and model for your requirements, however this often does not happen due to installers/companies being associated with certain brands and the associated kick backs they get from this. Lack of knowledge and other reasons exist which also can prevent them from advising you on what is best for you and your situation.

Always use boiler installers/companies that provide quotations over those that provide estimates wherever possible! For more information in this regard, please see here.

Questions to ask your boiler engineer

  • Is a conventional, system or combi boiler better suited to my home and situation?
  • What make and model of boiler do you recommend and why?
  • What disturbances will there be to my home?
  • Where can the boiler go?
  • What warranties/guarantees are included with the work?
  • Must I service the boiler to keep up such warranties/guarantees, if so, how often?
  • What accreditations does your company/you have?

Step 2: Boiler installation process

Once the survey has been completed and the quotation has been agreed upon, an appointment is arranged to install the new boiler.

On the agreed day, an engineer should attend and complete the boiler installation as quickly and efficiently as possible. They should explain how to use the controls and check the system works before completion. You can then check the work yourself before they leave.

The commissioning engineer should leave you with the instruction manuals as well as filling out the Benchmark certificate. Benchmark is a national scheme managed by the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC). It puts the responsibility of installing, commissioning and servicing of domestic heating and hot water products in the hands of manufacturers and installers and is a mandatory requirement for gas engineers to complete following  a boiler installation.

Within 30 days you should receive confirmation of your warranty (certification from the manufacturer) and a Gas Safe building control document as proof as you have had the boiler installed correctly and to all the required standards.
