“Gas pipework can be a minefield for the inexperienced! There are books upon books of legislation, standards, Code of Practice and other aspects which regulate the installation and maintenance of gas pipework and systems. Sure, being Gas Safe registered should mean that the person you are using is up to scratch, but if that was the case, then why is there so much dangerous work being done out in the marketplace?”

How Gas & LPG Pipework Can Become Dangerous
Most of the time, gas pipework that is or becomes dangerous is a result of poor installation practices.
Gas & LPG may smell funny, but it is not poisonous. The smell is purposely added to the gases to make them detectable my people when leaks occur. Lung fulls of either are not going to a benefit to health, but unburnt gas is not dangerous like carbon monoxide is.
Gas & LPG becomes dangerous when it leaks and collects in confined spaces. LPG is the most dangerous as it is more volitile, more explosive and is denser than air, which means it can accumulate to hazardous levels in dwelling more easily. Natural gas is more detectable, ventilates better due to it being lighter than air and is less volatile, but still can be very dangerous.
Gas/LPG leaks under floors, into cavities and other tight spaces where a source of ignition can ignite them, is when things go horribly wrong. A skilled gas engineer will always do their utmost to mitigate such risks, so even if a gas leak occurs, the chance of accumulation that could lead to an explosion is reduced.
Other issues with gas pipework are usually a result of design. As gas and LPG are supplied into domestic gas systems between a small range of low pressures. Errors in pipework design and installation can easily affect the amount of gas and pressure available at a gas appliance which can affect its performance, and in severe cases, its safety.
When gas pipes are undersized, it is usually because the installer has utilised an existing inadequate gas supply or cut corners to reduce installation costs. This could be through error, laziness, trying to make more money on a job or trying to low-bid jobs to win work. Either way, it goes on and is a common occurrence.
How LPG And Mains Gas Differs From One Another
LPG gas, commonly known as bottled gas, is supplied in cylinders, or by bulk to fixed vessels. It is an off-grid fuel that is one of several options for properties that are not connected to the mains gas network, or in mobile applications such as mobile catering units and camper vans. LPG is a manufactured gas.
Mains gas, also known as natural gas, is supplied through the extensive gas network we have in the UK and is the main fuel used for heat and power production. Natural gas is a naturally forming gas that occurs in various places in the world and is piped from the source to the point of use.
LPG is more expensive than mains gas. LPG varies in price depending on how it is supplied (bulk or cylinder), the location and other factors.
The main difference in terms of the gases properties are as follows:
Mains gas is lighter than air, whereas LPG is denser than air.
LPG is more volatile than natural gas and requires less of a concentration to become explosive
Due to LPG being denser than air, being more volatile and requiring less gas to cause an explosion, potentially it is much more dangerous. LPG can collect in confined spaces and go unnoticed until dangerous concentration levels are achieved.
As LPG is a richer fuel, it required much less gas to produce the same amount of heat as natural gas, therefore works well in limited storage capacities, such as cylinders.
LPG gas is explosive at much lower concentrations than mains gas, plus as it is denser than air, unlike mains gas, it can collect at low-level and be harder to detect.
